The Chevelle was already becoming a good reason to get a Chevrolet, with the SS models delivering the performance that many potential buyers have long been searching for.
Chevrolet continued to tweak the lineup with the introduction of new engines, eventually turning the SS 396 into a separate lineup in 1966. It didn’t take long for Chevrolet to undo some of these choices, as the Super Sport rebecame a Chevelle upgrade package in 1969.
The SS package makes a Chevelle more desirable for someone particularly interested in an original model, granted the right engine is under the hood.
The 1967 Chevelle SS in these photos leaves many questions without an answer but is still an intriguing project for someone who doesn’t care about an all-original setup.
The first thing everybody must know is that this Chevelle is now parked outside, and this is the main reason why it ended up on Craigslist. The owner explains that they got the car from a friend, so they parked it outside in their yard, where it was supposed to get a second chance with a complete restoration.
The good news is that this Chevelle is a real 138 car – the code means it’s an SS 396, albeit you’ll have to inspect it thoroughly to determine how much of the original SS 396 is still around.
Considering it’s been sitting outside, it’s not surprising that it needs new floors and a truck panel, as the rust has already invaded the undersides. As anyone can tell, it has already received several new panels, but the work must continue inside the car, where you’ll also find heavy damage.
The engine under the hood is a big block, but the owner doesn’t share more information, albeit it looks like it has already received some work. A good mechanic should be able to decipher everything when opening the hood, so go see this Chevelle in person if you like it. The owner says the Chevelle does not run, but it’s unclear why.
Everything on this Chevelle SS suggests the car deserves a complete overhaul, but the owner didn’t even share a price, so it all comes down to costs. If they are willing to let it go at a fair price, this car will almost certainly find a new home, not necessarily for a complete restoration, but even for quick fixes that could get it back on the road. It also depends on the engine under the hood, as a big block isn’t always good news.
I’m certain many people close to Millerton will consider this Chevelle at least as intriguing as I did, so fingers crossed for another Super Sport to get saved before winter is coming and the rust invasion makes progress.
